Problem #1

Newton's First Law

Two 25.0-N weights are suspended at opposite ends of a rope that passes over a light, frictionless pulley. The pulley is attached to a chain that goes to the ceiling. (a) What is the tension in the rope? (b) What is the tension in the chain?

I'd say this is an easy enough question to start out with. It doesn't require any algebra so don't bother forming net force equations. If this problem is hard for you try drawing a free-body diagram or two. (keep in mind the superposition of forces concept when finding the tension in the chain.)

Answer
(a) 25.0-N
(b) 50.0-N
